Why Did Abby Leave NCIS? What Were Her Reasons for Departure and Its Impact?

Why Did Abby Leave NCIS? Given that Pauley who acted as Abby in NCIS left the show at the end of Season 15 almost four years ago, some new and old viewers alike are still confused about why the show’s stalwart left her most recognized role. So, what made her do it? Let’s review everything that led to Pauley’s departure from the show.

Why Did Abby Leave NCIS?

Abby Sciuto left NCIS because she couldn’t work with Mark Harmon any longer. Even though she was not a field agent, Sciuto was adored by both her squad and the audience.

As the eccentric, goth forensic specialist, Sciuto’s acute eye couldn’t miss anything — as long as there was enough Caf-Pow to keep her going.

Abby always got the job done, even if her techniques weren’t always conventional. Sciuto quit NCIS after 15 seasons to launch a nonprofit in memory of her buddy Clayton Reeves, who died saving her life.

Pauley Perrette and Mark Harmon had a falling out after Harmon’s dog attacked a crew member on set, despite the close bond between Abby and Gibbs on NCIS.

The two got into such a furious argument that they had to film on different days, and the screenplay was prepared to prevent them from being on screen at the same moment, according to reports that Harmon had continued to bring the dog on location.

Will Abby Ever Come Back To NCIS?

Pauley Perrette’s (Abby) decision to stop acting immediately suggests that we won’t be seeing her on NCIS going forward, but her retirement need not be final.

Cameron Diaz, who starred in Annie in 2014, followed suit and came back ten years later to reunite with Jamie Foxx for Netflix’s Back in Action. Though it’s just conjecture, it’s also feasible that Perrette’s acting abilities were hampered by the stroke.

And there’s always Mark Harmon to think about. He hasn’t been on NCIS for a few years, as was previously reported, so his absence might be reason enough for Perrette to return to the show—even if it’s just as a guest star.

Given that Cote de Pablo played Ziva David again in Seasons 17 for a few episodes, the NCIS writers could undoubtedly devise a plot point where Abby Sciuto goes back to her former haunts if Perrtette was willing and able.

It’s unfortunate, of course, that fans will very likely never get to see Abby and Leroy Jethro Gibbs together once more.

What Pauley Perrette Did After NCIS?

Pauley Perrette starred in the sitcom Broke for CBS two years after departing from NCIS. In the show, she played Jackie, a single mother who took in her estranged sister and her husband after the man’s family severed their ties.

After just one 13-episode season, which ran from April to June of 2020, Broke was canceled. In November of that same year, Perrette declared her acting retirement.

The now-retired actress found the next few years to be particularly difficult. Apart from her father’s early 2021 COVID-19 death, Perrette revealed in September 2022 that she had experienced a “massive stroke” the previous September.

She was quite open about the health scare, revealing that she was on the verge of death. Since March 2023, Perrette has maintained a rather low-key online persona, having stopped tweeting.

Final Words

Abby’s departure reflects a complicated mix of personal and professional factors. It reminds us that even in the glossy world of television, deep human emotions and relationships may have a huge impact on our judgments.
