After working on the show Catfish for four years, Max made a saddening announcement. He shared that he would be taking a break from the show to focus on directing his very first feature film called We Are Friends.
Max later rejoined Catfish briefly after finishing his film, but in 2018, he decided to leave the show for good to concentrate on his blossoming film career.
In a heartfelt statement, Max expressed his feelings about leaving Catfish. He said, “Hey guys, sadly, the time has come for me to move on from Catfish.
Working on this show for the last seven years has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I’ve learned a lot about myself, my country, and human nature in general.

Max had been juggling two careers as a TV host and a filmmaker for some time. While it was a dream come true to be so busy, he realized that he couldn’t sustain that level of activity in his life anymore.
Catfish was still going strong with seven seasons, 115 episodes, and 31 specials, showing no signs of slowing down. Max felt that it was finally the right moment for him to say goodbye.
Max’s final episode on Catfish aired on August 22, 2018. However, in an interview with PageSix on July 14, 2022, Max hinted at a possible return.
He said, “I think they’re doing a great job with just the two of them, but it would be nice and I hope to potentially do a trio at some point. But I can’t say for sure right now… It would probably be fun if it happened.”
