Former member of the popular group One Direction Zayn Malik has revealed the real reason behind why he left his former colleagues. The singer had in his mind to leave the group and start his solo career in the year 2015, which was the peak of their world tour.
He had then said that he was leaving 1D due to “stress”. But now, Zayn has spoken of the real reason for it while talking to Alex Cooper on the podcast ‘Call Her Daddy’.
Why Did Zayn Leave One Direction?
According to him, “There was a lot of—look I don’t want to go into too much detail, but there was a lot of politics going on,” he said during the July 12 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast. “Certain people were doing certain things, certain people didn’t want to sign contracts, so I knew something was happening, so I just got ahead of the curve. I was like, ‘I’m just going to get out of here. I think this is done.'”
As the 30-year-old explained, he was more than ready to take charge of his career.
“I completely selfishly wanted to be the first person to go and make my record, if I’m being completely honest with you,” the dad to daughter Khai, 2, (with ex Gigi Hadid) said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to jump the gun here for the first time.'”
And though he would usually describe himself as “passive,” the “Pillowtalk” singer said he’s the opposite when it comes to his music.
“I’m serious about it and I’m competitive, so I wanted to be the first to go and do my own thing,” he added. “That was the reason—and then there were underlying issues, like within our friendships too.”
Zayn Malik Explains How He Views One Direction Now
As Zayn explained, it was just a matter of growing pains.
“We’ve been together every day for five years and we’ve got sick of each other if I’m being completely honest,” he added. “We were close.
We’ve done crazy things with each other that nobody else in the world will ever understand or have those experiences that we’ve shared, and I look back on it now in a much fonder light than I would’ve as I just left. There were great experiences, I had great times with them, but yeah, we just run our course.”
Final Thoughts
The star quit the band in the middle of their 2015 world tour, initially saying he had taken a break due to “stress”.
But speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Zayn said it was the days the band were signed on to a new contract without the others that he realized the days were numbered for the band.
